EPCOT: Goodbye Spaceship Earth wand

Bye bye EPCOT wand

Ding dong, the wand is dead. Finally!

The hideous millennium wand and dismembered Mickey Mouse arm that’s clung to the side of EPCOT’s geodesic sphere for the last seven years is finally coming down. It has been reported that Siemens, the new sponsor of the attraction, made a request that it be removed as part of the current Spaceship Earth rehab.

In a kind of ironic fashion, the news has been confirmed just one month after the EPCOT Central blog decided to call it a day.

The Leave a Legacy monoliths with remain until at least 2020, but I hope they at least remove the ugly brown decals from the support legs before then.

Some related bits and pieces:

In case you’d forgotten how fantastic it used to look, here’s a reminder. This is a promotional slide from Walt Disney World in 1982, courtesy of Jeff B on Flickr:

Newsflash: Hollywood execs know nothing

Newsflash: Hollywood execs know nothing: “We always hear about how entertainment execs earn their giant salaries by being incredibly shrewd selectors and marketers of motion pictures, but this chart shows that you could get the same result by throwing dice.”

O2 to get iPhone in the UK

O2 ‘to get iPhone contract in UK’: Not so handy for me because I’m already on the O2 network and the best phone deals always seem to go to new customers.

Why Second Life will never go mainstream

Why Second Life will never go mainstream: For me, this biggest thing that put me off was the enormous learning curve. When I first played World of Warcraft I was up and playing like a noob that thought he was a pro in minutes. Second Life had me fumbling around for half an hour before I got fed up and uninstalled it.

Blade Runner Special Effects: 25 Years On

Blade Runner movie still

As anyone that knows me can tell you, Blade Runner is one of my favourite movies — so any article with something to say about it is going to catch my attention. I had to share this one, however, over at Popular Mechanics, about the pre-digital special effects used in the film and how well they stand up to today’s CGI-fueled sci-fi.

I’m also still very eagerly awaiting the long-overdue “Final Cut” and “Special Edition” DVDs due out later this year. I’ll believe it when I see them.
